Woman picking between two Pakistani shalwar kameez outfits in her closet. What stays what goes? Decluttering

Through the magic door: Step 1 - What goes and What stays?

This post is the first in a series of posts designed by TPS to help you declutter your wardrobe and get it resale ready. Here we help you decide what pieces to keep and what pieces you need to let go.

Through the magic door: Step 1 - What goes and What stays?

If you’re here we’re guessing you have the D word on your mind. It is D-day. Let the world be Damned.  We’re Decluttering ’til we’re Done!

That was a lot of D-words on your mind. Let’s begin shall we.

One by one, you’ll pick up each item and channel your inner Marie Kondo: Does it spark joy?*

We have to admit we were very confused with the question of joy for a long time.

Most of the stuff we own is there to make sure we show up to the school drop off lane looking decent, or avoid weird looks at the  grocery store. Finding joy in clothes isn’t exactly a daily necessity.

As we’ve matured however, we’ve learned that joy actually means asking:

  • Does it fit ? - It’s sparking no joy if it’s two sizes too small and you’re spilling out of it (or not even getting in). That’s just depressing. Let it go honey. It’s for the best. OUT!
  • Is it your style? - While you might’ve been edgy three years ago perhaps that isn’t the look that’s vibin’ anymore (see what we did there? That one was for the Gen Z's reading this page*). OUT!
  • Too much of a good thing? - Ok so maybe you slayed that look. But you didn’t need multiples of the same thing. If there are five shirts that look like each other, at least three need to go. OUT!
  • It’s been a year! - So there’s a piece that fits, it’s your style, and one-of-a-kind, but you haven’t reached for it in a while. Namely 365 potential days, and several dawats, and events later, it still just sadly hangs alone. This is a tough cookie to crack. Ask yourself: “What is it worth to you hanging in your closet?” If there isn’t a strong sentimental value attached to it, it needs to go. OUT!

We bet after a long day of self-reflection, guilt, and many promises against over-indulgence that you will break in the future, you will have a decent pile of clothes you are ready to part with.

Reward yourself for a job well done (no retail therapy please). A cup of your favorite beverage will do just fine.

On to Step 2!
