Preparing for the Virtual Store: Step 3 - Take out the camera

Time to get your pieces picture ready!

This can be the most fun part of listing your clothes. It will help you appreciate your pieces in a whole different light!

Note: This is the point where you might start doubting your decision to sell. You may fall back in love with your outfit all over again and find yourself asking...

Should I just keep it?

No. You shouldn’t.

Remind yourself that this piece made it to step 3 for a reason.

It’s actually a GOOD thing that you’re falling in love with it. Chances are somebody else will too. Make it as charming and irresistible as possible.

Let’s show you how to create a pièce de résistance

  • Remove the wrinkles - As painful as it may be, wrinkles on clothes just don't look pretty in pictures. If your piece is especially crumpled up, it's time to take out your steam iron!
  • Find the perfect blank canvas - You need a surface that is empty and one solid color. Ideally a white or neutral wall or door work best.
  • The element of light - Lighting is KEY in a product picture, and the most ignored. Ideally you want your empty wall or door close to a window for a natural light source. We don’t want to turn up the brightness of screens 300% to see what you put up there.
Optimize Daylight - Natural light coming in through the window will make for a well lit picture. Shoot your pictures when you have the best light coming in.
When the sun won’t shine - Weather and sunlight can be unpredictable, we get. Or perhaps daytime doesn’t work for you. In this case, find a well lit room or place a source of light close to your blank wall or door. Make sure there are minimal shadows and the colors of your piece are clearly visible through your camera.
    • Focus! - We simply cannot tell you how many blurry images we see and simply how ineffective they are. Focus your shot!
On your phone - Tap your screen on the product to make sure the camera focuses there. You can hold the tap for a few seconds to lock in the auto focus. Do NOT take your pictures in Portrait mode.
      • We need to see the whole thing - Would you buy something if only the tag or arm of the outfit was shown? Neither would we.
Whole item - Step back or zoom out to make sure the whole item fit in the shot.
Photograph EVERYTHING -  If an outfit has three pieces, please photograph each one separately.
Details, details - If your outfit has stunning embroidery,  beadwork, or a bold pattern that shouldn’t be missed, then zoom in with your camera and capture it. Sellers look for these details!

If you paid attention like you did in Kindergarten, you will have a some swoon worthy pictures to list.

Time to take out the measuring tape for Step 4. ( Coming Soon!)
